NOTE : نياز داشتن and نياز بودن have the shared meaning element of نياز , ie ‘need’ but are never interchangeable in that they occur in grammatically different constructions. نياز داشتن takes an animate or inanimate subject, that is كسي or چيزي whether express or implied. But نيازبودن is used in two different constructions. Like the English ‘need’ نياز بودن and نيازداشتن are used very generally without the idea of poverty with the following denotations: a. to indicate obligation or, in its negative form, absence of obligation, eg نيازي به كمك داريد؟ Do you need any help? b. (to indicate an obligation) (do you need money?( نيازداشتن and نياز به چيزي داشتن are also frequently used in senses devoid of the core meaning of ‘poverty, destitution, or indigence’ as when we say اين خانه نياز به تعمير اساسي دارد. This house needs an overhaul. When used to indicate the idea of obligation, or absence of obligation, نياز داشتن and نياز بودن - and their negative forms, نياز نداشتن and نياز نبودن are sometimes interchangeable with مجبور بودن or مجبور نبودن that is a common feature with the English, eg مجبور نبودم به بانك بروم I didn’t need to go to the bank. Less commonly, and only when the idea or circumstances allow, in certain constructions enquiring a mere obligation, the Persian بايد sometimes does the same job, eg بايد الان بروي؟ (need you go now?( See also نيازمندي below.
